Description
Lulworth Castle is a Grade I listed building located in East Lulworth, built around 1608 as a hunting lodge for Henry Howard, Lord Bindon. It was remodeled between 1609 and 1611 for Thomas Lord Suffolk, again in 1641 for Humphrey Weld, and later in the 18th century by the Bastard brothers of Blandford and John Tasker in the 1780s. The castle was gutted by fire in 1929.
The main front is constructed of ashlar stone, while the rest is made of rubble stone. The building has a square plan with circular corner towers, designed in a pseudo-military style. It features three storeys and a basement, with the towers rising to four storeys. The main east front includes a raised terrace with stone steps and a balustrade, a round-headed doorway flanked by twin porticos with Ionic columns and entablatures, and small circular windows on either side. Above the door is a circular traceried window. The ground floor has two tall mullioned windows, with four more on the first and second floors, each adorned with carved lion's heads below them. The towers also have similar windows. The west front has a simpler entrance, while the other elevations are similar but lack entrances and feature four windows on each floor. Lulworth Castle is a Scheduled Ancient Monument under the guardianship of English Heritage.
