Description

Goughs Barton is a farmhouse with attached farm buildings, dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, and significantly altered since. The exterior is of rubble construction, rendered and finished with a slate roof and gable ends. There are three 20th-century brick stacks. The building follows a longhouse plan, retaining remnants of a cross-passage at the south end and having farm buildings, which were formerly a barn, at the north end. It is two storeys high with a six-window front featuring 20th-century casement windows. The original plank front door is set within a brick porch dating from around 1800, which has a gauged elliptical arch and a pitched slate roof. Inside, a large open fireplace is visible, with a wooden lintel above, the associated stack backing on to the former cross-passage. The ceiling features deep-chamfered beams, including a half-pyramid stop in the left-hand room, dating from the 17th century. The roof structure is entirely modern.
