Description

Thorncombe Farm House is a farmhouse built at right angles to the street, dating from the mid 16th to 17th century. It features rubble walls with stone plinths and quoins, and a 20th-century Roman tile roof with 17th-century stone coping at the gable ends. The original front doorway, located to the left of center, has been replaced with a French window, while a new front door is situated well to the right of center. There are brick stacks on the ridge at the gables and one 20th-century brick stack at the eaves from the front wall Hall fireplace. The house has two storeys and a four-window range, with ham stone mullion windows that have hollow chamfers on the ground floor (renewed, except for one) and ovole mouldings on the first floor (also renewed). One window extends above the eaves.

Inside, the original layout included a kitchen cross-passage, Hall, and Parlour, with a plank and muntin partition on the inner left side of the cross-passage. The Hall features very fine moulded ceiling beams of heavy section that carry the joists, dating from the 16th century and cut at the fireplace end. There is a stone fireplace with a straight chamfer that is stopped. The roof structure is now 20th-century, having previously been thatched. This house is an important example of the cross-passage type and retains many good original features. It is part of a closely-packed group of buildings on Fore Street.
