Description

Bloxworth House is a country house built in 1608, with alterations and restorations occurring in the 18th and 19th centuries, and a significant restoration around 1970. The external walls are largely brick, featuring some burnt header decoration on a stone plinth. The tiled roof has stone eaves courses and coped gables, with brick stacks on the ridge and gables, some featuring oversailing caps and diagonal shafts. Originally laid out in an E-plan form, the main north elevation is dominated by a full-height, central gabled porch. This porch features a square-headed doorway with a moulded stone surround, and a three-light stone mullioned window above it, alongside a similar two-light window in the attic. Projecting gabled wings extend from each end.

The east kitchen wing has a four-light stone mullioned ground floor window, a three-light double-hung sash window with glazing bars on the first floor, and a three-light stone mullioned attic window. An adjoining square stair tower rises with a hipped roof and two two-light stone mullioned windows. Recessed sections flanking the porch also have three-light stone mullioned windows on each floor. A 20th-century stair turret has been added to the west parlour wing. This wing incorporates an 18th-century central bay with double-hung sash windows featuring glazing bars, set beneath gauged arches with keystones. A parapet tops the bay, embellished with ball finials, and a timber casement window is placed in the attic.

All the stone mullioned windows, along with others across the house, incorporate lead lights, including some reset 16th-century stained glass. A 19th-century extension to the west parlour wing features a canted bay with stone mullioned windows. Internally, the hall contains a 17th-century stone fireplace with a four-centred arch, and a simpler fireplace is found in the room above. A 17th-century plank and muntin partition remains in the kitchen. Several first-floor rooms have 18th-century fireplaces with hob grates, and an early 19th-century stair is located in the east tower. The attic contains one blocked doorway with a four-centred head, and curved brackets beneath the attic ceiling, just east of the porch – these potentially mark the site of a former cross-gable.

The house represents an early example of brickwork in Dorset. Attached to the east is a boundary wall, connecting the house to the former stables. This wall is constructed of brick with moulded coping, and features stone gate piers with moulded caps and ball finials, likely dating back to the 18th century.
