Description
The Netherbury War Memorial is a memorial dedicated to those who fell in the First and Second World Wars, erected around 1920, with names of the Second World War added after 1945.
Constructed from limestone ashlar and set on a concrete foundation, the memorial is located within a planted area that is accessed by stone steps. It is positioned above a retaining wall on the east side of Chantry Street, bordered by a wall to the south, east, and north. The memorial faces west and is situated to the south of the Grade I listed medieval church of St Mary and east of the Grade II listed Old Rectory.
The memorial features a tall, elongated Latin stone cross approximately 3.5 meters high, with a tapering octagonal shaft and crossarm. The shaft is mounted on a corniced square plinth, which is supported by a two-tier stepped base, making the total height 1.25 meters. The top tier of the base bears the inscription: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF NETHERBURY-CUM-SALWAY ASH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918." The front of the plinth lists 25 names, while the east side features a recessed panel inscribed with "1939-1945" followed by six names of the Fallen.
