Description

The building comprises a water mill with fabric dating from circa 1500, largely rebuilt in 1647, and further alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries. It consists of two separate ranges connected by a wing to the southwest; the Mill House occupies the northeasternmost part of the northerly range. The front of the Mill House is rendered, three storeys and attic in height, featuring a two-window bay and incorporating four-pane sash windows. A doorway is centrally positioned with a recessed glazed door, and a small loft door is visible in the gable. A lean-to outshut is present on the right side. The northwest-facing front of the southern range is of two storeys, divided into two sections with the northern section lower in height. This section is constructed of stone rubble with a slate roof, exhibiting a loft door in the gable, topped by another door below.

The interior retains significant water mill machinery, including late 18th-century wooden components and late 19th-century cast-iron elements. Specifically, a large, late 18th-century vertical timber shaft supports a late 18th-century timber crown-wheel, and a circa 1880s cast-iron spur-wheel and wallower. The hurst-frame has undergone alteration but retains fabric from the 1790s. Remnants of three pairs of millstones and a later sack-hoist, powered from the late 18th-century shaft, are also present. A roof purlin is dated 1797. Evidence of Medieval green glazed ridge tiles has been found within the building. Archaeological investigations reveal five phases of water wheels and four phases of floor levels. The mill was owned by the Lyme Regis Town Council from 1500 to 1740, and historical records relating to the mill are extant.
