Description

Portland Lodge is an early to mid-19th century building situated on Clappentail Lane, Lyme Regis. A building is depicted on this site on a “Plan of Lyme Regis and Environs” from 1841. The building has undergone later alterations, particularly to its street-facing fenestration. The garden front is divided into two sections.

The left-hand section is three storeys and an attic, with a basement, and has a slate hipped roof topped with a ball finial. The eaves are shallow, and there are flanking chimney stacks. The front is rendered, and it features two window bays. The upper floors contain French casements with rectangular fanlights; shutters are fitted within, and steps lead to the casement on the left. A lean-to conservatory extends from the left-hand end.

The right-hand section is three storeys over a lower ground floor. It has a similar elevation to the left-hand section, with a hipped slate roof. The front is rendered, and it has two window bays. Sash windows are present; the ground floor sashes are particularly large. Glazing bars remain intact in the ground floor windows and the upper portions of the second floor windows. The property once featured a garden designed in the Italian style.
