Description
The Peek Memorial Chapel is a Grade II listed building located on the south side of Pound Street. Originally built as a stable block for Poulett House, which is now the Alexandra Hotel, it was converted in the late 19th century. The chapel is a rectangular structure made of blue lias stone, with the southwest-facing side and gable end featuring roughcast cladding. A hexagonal bell-cote sits on the ridge behind the gable end's parapet. The street-facing front has ham stone dressings, including a ham stone parapet with coping. There are two round-headed windows with moulded stone heads, keystones, and imposts, along with an oval lunette above. To the right, there is a single-storey addition with a doorway. The ham stone doorway has a moulded three-centred head, carved spandrels, trusses, and a triangular pediment that features a carved crucifix in the tympanum. The chapel is part of a group that includes the Hotel Alexandra, Nos 1 and 2 Alexandra Cottage, Nos 5 and 6 St Michael's Hotel, Shamien Hotel, and the Stile House Hotel and wall in Stile Lane.
