Description
The Chimneys Hotel, previously known as Old Chimney Cottage, is a hotel that originated as a large gentry house, dating back to the 16th century. It has undergone modern rebuilding at the rear, evidenced by a raised roof pitch, and has been refenestrated. The building is constructed of coursed lias stone walls with a thatched roof featuring gable ends. There are two rendered stacks projecting from the left and right hand gables, and a large, projecting front stack located centrally. This front stack was rebuilt in 1982 with extensive pointing. The original layout consists of three units on the ground floor, with a parlour and hall situated at the centre. The original entrance point has not been determined. The building has two storeys and originally had four windows, now replaced with 3-light metal casements featuring glazing bars, set in wooden frames and mullions. Two small, single windows with leaded lights are positioned either side of the stack on the first floor. A C20 wooden studded door is located at the right hand end of the south front, sheltered by a hipped thatch canopy. A large outshut extends from the rear, featuring rendered walls and a tile roof, and includes a small canted oriel. Inside, the hall showcases heavily moulded ceiling beams divided into 16 compartments, with joists running in opposing directions within each cell, dating back to the 16th century. A 19th-century stone fireplace in a Tudor style is also present.
