Description
Japonica Cottage is a single-story cottage with a core dating back to the 16th century and alterations made in the 17th century. It is constructed of coursed lias stone walls, with hipped ends. The cottage has two 20th-century brick stacks; one is located behind the cross-passage, and the other is below the right-hand hip apex. There are four windows; the ground-floor windows have two 4-light hollow-chamfered mullions with returned labels above. The upper-floor windows are 2-light wooden casements with wooden cills. A very small, triangular-headed window is situated above the front door. The front door, which is 20th century, is a plank door with a chamfered wooden lintel and is slightly left of centre. A hipped thatch canopy, supported by wooden posts, extends over the front door. A curving cob wall is located at the right-hand end. The interior reveals two jointed cruck trusses with pegged cruck-spurs. A set of heavy through purlins, dating to the 16th century, is also visible. The left-hand room has a deep-chamfered ceiling beam with heavy filleted stops.
