Description

Farrs House is a house dating from the late 18th century and early 19th century, with an enlargement in the mid-19th century. It has plastered walls and roofs, with parts tiled and parts slated, featuring stone eaves courses. The house originally had a U-shaped plan, consisting of a main front range with projecting rear wings at each end. In the mid-19th century, the rear courtyard was enclosed to create a gallery. The main front range has four pairs of French windows on the ground floor, with stepped glazing bars, gothic traceried fanlights, and shutters, along with a single casement window. The first floor has five double-hung sash windows with glazing bars. Remnants of an iron verandah are present along both the main front elevation and the east elevation, which has similar fenestration. The roof of this wing is slated. The main entrance is on the rear north front, which is characterized by three gables; the central gable is the result of the later infilling. A part-glazed door is present. The ground floor of the north front has four mullioned windows with top-hung lights and hood-moulds. The first floor features two similar windows in the outer wings, and a large central window illuminating the gallery. Small windows with hood-moulds are found in the attics of each wing. Internally, the ground floor rooms of the original building contain contemporary carved marble fireplace surrounds. One main room has an alcove with an elliptical arch and panelled jambs, flanked by cupboards with ornamental tympana. The gallery has an open timber roof of arch-braced collar form, alongside a moulded balustrade. The staircase, located in the east wing, features moulded balusters and a wreathed handrail.
