Description

Higher Orchard is a former farmhouse that has been converted into a private house. It dates back to the 17th century, with some alterations and extensions made in the 20th century. The building features rubble-stone walls and a thatched roof with stone gable-coping at the left end. There are stone stacks at both gable ends, and the structure is 1½ storeys high. It has four windows, which are three-light wood-framed iron casements with rectangular leaded lights, and wood lintels above them that date from the 19th century.

The entrance door is located to the left of center; it is panelled with glazed sections in the top half. The north elevation includes a former dairy wing at the rear, which was raised by one storey in the 20th century and also has a thatched roof. There is a porch to the left of center, made of rubble-stone with a gabled roof, and the door-jambs are styled in a 17th-century manner with a depressed-arch head, although they are from the 20th century. The door itself is a plank-and-muntin design.

Inside, the house has open fireplaces in both end rooms. The fireplace in the west room features a recess in the back wall and in the side wall. There is also a cupboard with a ribbed panel door and side panels that are pierced and decorated with incised geometric patterns, complete with HL hinges, all dating from the 17th century.
