Description
The former school and master's house in Sandford Orcas was built in 1859. It is constructed of stone rubble with Ham stone dressings and features a steeply-pitched clay scalloped tile roof. The gable ends have stone coping, kneelers, and gableted apexes, with a chimney stack on the left gable end that has a rebuilt brick shaft.
The building has a plan where the schoolroom is on the right and the master's house is in a crosswing on the left. It is designed in the Tudor Gothic style and consists of two storeys and an attic. The master's house, located in the gabled crosswing, has a blind ground floor and a first floor with a three-light window that has a hoodmould, along with a two-light attic window above featuring a trefoil ventilator in the gable apex. The single-storey schoolroom on the right has two two-light windows, all of which have moulded stone frames with hoodmoulds. The right-hand return gable end showcases a large four-light cross-mullion-transom window with a hoodmould and a quatrefoil ventilator in the gable above.
This building is a good example of a small parish school and master's house in the Tudor Gothic style. The interior has not been inspected.
