Description
Lewell Lodge is a detached house set in grounds, featuring Gothic detailing, built around 1796 for Adair Hawkins and extended shortly thereafter. The building has brick walls, mostly covered in stucco, and slate roofs with gable ends and gable stacks. It has a rectangular Georgian plan with a central hallway that includes a staircase, flanked by two rooms on each side. The house is two storeys tall, with cellars and attics.
There are three windows on the front, which are sashes with pointed heads, marginal glazing bars, cross bars, wooden sills, and separate returned labels above each window. The entrance porch is centrally located, featuring two leaf plank doors set in a pointed archway, also with returned labels above. The east gable wall includes a two-storey canted bay window with a 1:3:1 light arrangement, showcasing the same Gothic detailing. An early 19th-century northeast wing has been added, featuring a three-light window on the ground floor and two two-light windows on the first floor, all maintaining the Gothic style. A French window is present on the gable end.
Inside, the hall staircase features cusped tracery between the balusters, and there are stained glass shields of arms in two of the windows. The remaining fittings are in the typical classical style of the period, including some original decorated iron fire grates.
