Description
The Old Vicarage is a semi-detached house, originally built around 1600, and altered and enlarged in the 18th and early 19th centuries. It was initially the east wing of a larger vicarage. The house began as timber-framed and was later re-clad in brick during the 18th century, with the walls raised in the 19th century. The external walls are now brick, set on a rubble stone base, and the roof is tiled with stone eaves courses, featuring brick end stacks. It is arranged over three storeys. The current entrance is positioned in the east wall, on the garden front which was originally the front of a smaller single house; this features a part-glazed door with sidelights, sheltered by a timber post lean-to porch, and a pair of French doors. The first and second floors each have two casement windows with glazing bars, set within segmental arches. Some original timber framing is visible in the right end wall. A single-storey brick block with a slate roof is attached to this wall and contains one casement window with glazing bars. To the right of this block are the remains of a further 19th-century range that was demolished around 1970; low walls of this range now serve as garden walls. Inside, a ground floor room at the south end has moulded intersecting ceiling beams. A room to the north of this features deep chamfered ceiling beams and a large fireplace that has been altered. Remains of timber-framed walling are visible in the north ground floor room. The garden boundary walls that adjoin Ilsington House are constructed of brick with shaped copings.
