Description

This is a group of six headstones located in the churchyard, three meters northeast of the chancel of the Church of Saint Mary in Puddletown. The monuments date from the 18th and 19th centuries. One headstone commemorates Martha and Robert Purchase, dated 1743, featuring a baroque scroll top with carved cherubs' heads flanking an hourglass and scroll borders. Another headstone is for Theophilis Bartlett Pope, dated 1855, which has a pointed arched top and includes a carved tree and urn. There are also headstones for Stephen Arnold, dated 1857, and William Bartlett, dated 1862, both in an 18th-century style with curved tops and draped urns. Additionally, there is a headstone for John and George Jesty, dated 1835, which has a Flemish style top and good lettering, and one for John Brymer, dated 1790.
