Description

No. 8 The Square is a semi-detached house that was originally the west wing of the Vicarage, built around 1722. It features brick walls and a tiled roof with stone eaves courses, hipped at the left end. A brick stack is set in from the left end, adorned with corner pilasters and an oversailing cap. The house has two storeys and an attic, with a moulded plat band at the first-floor level. At the right end, adjacent to the Old Vicarage, there is a single-storey flat-roofed porch with a parapet and cornice. The entrance includes a six-panel door with a fanlight, set in a moulded round-arched surround with pilasters and a keystone.

On the ground floor, there are four sash windows with glazing bars under gauged arches with keystones, and brick aprons below the cills. The first floor has four similar sash windows, plus one that is segmental-headed above the porch. The attic features two hipped dormers with casement windows that also have glazing bars. At the rear, there is a two-storey hipped-roofed staircase extension and later single-storey extensions. The left gable wall includes two semi-circular headed recesses on each floor, with evidence of former niches inside that correspond to these.

Inside, the main ground floor rooms are decorated with deep moulded cornices and raised panel dadoes, along with raised panel doors. The staircase has a cut string design with three turned balusters per tread, a wreathed handrail, and carved spandrel brackets.
