Description
This is an early to mid-19th century house, together with its associated garden wall and railings. The house is constructed of ashlar and is positioned at a right angle to the road. It is two storeys high with a three-window front. It features a wide eaves soffit with paired brackets above pilasters, and a central dormer. The first-floor windows are sash windows, while the ground-floor windows are large Venetian sashes set in sunk etched panels, with incised decoration in the spandrels. The central doorway is round-headed, with reeded imposts and a fanlight. Fluted pilaster strips are located between the window lights, and a fluted archivolt is present.
A wall of rough ashlar, a dwarf wall, and railings enclose the garden to the south-east of the house. A short length of wall is attached to the left angle of the house, and a gate is flanked by a pier. To the south-east of the gate, a stone dwarf wall has ashlar coping. The railings have uprights with spear-headed finials and panelled standards at intervals. These elements were likely built at the same time as the house.
The Duck House is part of a group including numbers 1 to 8 South Street, Gainsborough House, an outbuilding to the south of Gainsborough House, gate piers to the Old Bidewell, The Antique Shop, Lodbourne Hall, Ye Olde Cottage and its garden walls and railings.
