Description

The premises occupied by Phillips, located on South Street, date back to 1625 but were later modified in the 19th century. Originally designed as a single-storey corner building, an upper storey was added later. The structure is built of ashlar stone.

On the ground floor, there are five shop windows set in reveals, featuring semi-circular pilasters on projecting plinths, along with bands of necking and foliated capitals. The shop windows have three-centred heads, and the lintel blocks are decorated with a carved foliated design. Above these, there is a continuous toothed string, followed by a panelled frieze and a moulded cornice.

The upper floor is made of plain ashlar and includes three sash windows without glazing bars. Notably, in the fifth bay from the left, there is a splayed three-light oriel bay window with a panelled soffit. The ground floor design continues around the north corner, which is curved. Additionally, there is a plate-glass shop front on the ground floor facing Half Moon Street.
