Description

The House of Steps, including the rear range of outbuildings and the cottage numbered 7 at the rear, is located on Half Moon Street and dates from around 1625. The main building is a two-storey structure with a four-window ashlar front and a slate roof. The upper floor features sash windows, while the mid-19th century shop front exhibits a neo-Georgian style with a recessed center supported by cast iron. The shop front includes pilasters with incised line ornament and plate-glass windows on either side. The fascia is adorned with large moulded and voluted brackets supporting a cornice.

Cottage numbered 7, dating from the 18th to 19th century, is also two storeys tall with two window bays and a modern tile gabled roof. Its stone rubble front features 2-light windows, with the upper windows positioned below the eaves. The lower level has, from left to right, a segmental-headed window and two segmental-headed doorways, both with square-headed ledged doors; the northern door includes a small glazed panel.

To the west of No 7, there is a tall stone rubble building with a hipped roof that likely dates from the same period as the main front building and forms part of the courtyard behind The Three Steps. This building has one window with small panes facing east. South of this is a lower range of several outbuildings of varying heights, constructed with stone rubble walls and tile roofs.

The House of Steps, along with The Corner House, Sherborne Supermarket, The Plume of Feathers Hotel, and the premises occupied by C B Brett and Sons on Digby Road, form a cohesive group.
