Description

This is a mid-19th century commercial building situated on St Thomas Street, Weymouth, and returning to St Alban Street. The building is constructed of painted Flemish bond brickwork with stucco dressings and has slate roofs. It extends to three storeys and originally had 2+3+2 windows on the main façade, plus a three-window return to St Alban Street. The windows are margin-pane sashes set in moulded architraves, with sills supported by small brackets. At the first floor, each window has a floating cornice which is supported by consoles; the central window of number 34 features a moulded pediment. The ground floor currently has late 20th century shop fronts, replacing earlier detailing.

The return to St Alban Street retains a channelled ground floor, featuring a corner pilaster, one display window, a high-level three-pane light, and a door. The moulded cornice and a small blocking-course are also present on the return. The outer end of the block has a gable with a stack, and there are two further gable stacks on the main front. The interior of the building has not been inspected. The building is a handsome example of late classical design and is well maintained externally, although it has lost its original ground floor detailing.
