Description
The West Moors War Memorial is a First World War memorial that includes later additions for the Second World War. It was relocated to its current position in 1971.
Constructed from Portland stone, the memorial is situated on the village green at the center of West Moors. It features a plain wheel-headed cross that rises from a tapering square plinth, which is set on a two-stepped base.
The front face of the memorial bears the inscription: "WEST MOORS/ UNVEILED SEPTEMBER 26 1920/ REMOVED TO THIS SITE JUNE 1971." The side of the plinth states: "THESE/ GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR HUMANITY IN THE/ GREAT WARS/ 1914 - 1918/ 1939 - 1945/ THEIR NAME LIVETH/ FOR EVERMORE." The other two faces of the plinth list the names of the fallen, with the first face preceded by "IN HONOURED MEMORY," and the second by "1939 - 1945."
