Description

First World War memorial with later additions for the Second World War. It was moved in 1971.

MATERIALS: Portland stone.

DESCRIPTION: the memorial stands on the village green at the centre of West Moors.

It consists of a plain wheel-headed cross which rises from a tapering square plinth on a two-stepped base.

The inscription on the front face reads WEST MOORS/ UNVEILED SEPTEMBER 26 1920/ REMOVED TO THIS SITE JUNE 1971. The side of the plinth reads THESE/ GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR HUMANITY IN THE/ GREAT WARS/ 1914 - 1918/ 1939 - 1945/ THEIR NAME LIVETH/ FOR EVERMORE. The other two faces list the names of the fallen. The first is preceded by IN HONOURED MEMORY, and the second by 1939 - 1945.
