Description

Winwhistle Cottage is a detached cottage likely dating to the mid-to-late 16th century. It appears on Ordnance Survey maps as Skies Farm. Originally built as an open-hall, it may have been a long-house. The cottage has timber-framed walls and a half-hipped thatched roof. Two brick stacks were added later, one to the right end and the other to the left of centre. The building is one storey high with an attic. A ledged door is set within a 20th-century plastered porch with a hipped roof, located right of centre. A lean-to extension with plastered walls and a tiled roof is situated at the left end. The ground floor features three 20th-century casement windows with lead lights. Three dormers with similar casements are visible in the attic. A 20th-century rear extension has plastered walls and a thatched roof. Inside, the loft reveals smoke-blackened timbers and plaster. Several original timber-framed partitions remain, some now filled with brick. The hall retains a large open fireplace with a timber lintel and a bread oven, which has been altered. An inner room was likely always floored over, with ladder access from the hall.
