Description

Longham United Reform Church, formerly listed as Congregational Chapel, was built in 1841. The church features walls made of 'white' brick in Flemish bond, with yellow brick rubbed arches, Portland stone dressings, and some stucco. It has a slate roof and is a five-bay rectangular structure. Each bay includes a thin pilaster and a round-headed window set in an arched recess, with moulded caps on the pilasters and impost blocks, as well as stone cills and a continuous stone band above. The pilasters rest on a plain plinth and support a deep eaves band.

The south front of the church has a pediment gable, flanked by Ionic Order pilasters, which are topped with a stone moulded cornice and architrave band, and have a moulded base. The upper windows are round-headed, with the center window being wider, and they fit within recessed panels that also contain smaller rectangular lights at the ground floor on either side. The central entrance features a Tuscan porch with brick pilasters and plain stone columns, accessed by three steps. The doorway has an architrave and coupled doors, each consisting of four panels.

Above the gable, there is a slender bell turret with a square base, an octagonal panelled middle stage that includes a clock, and an octagonal upper stage recessed behind Doric Order columns, topped with a slim octagonal copper-covered spire. Inside, the church includes a gallery at the south end.
