Description
The Red House, along with its forecourt walls, railings, and Grey Lodge, is a notable building dating from the late 17th century, with a refronting that occurred in the early to mid 18th century. This two-storey structure features a five-window red brick front that is elevated above the road level and set behind a garden. It has a stone plinth, cornice, parapet, and chamfered quoins. The flat stone window architraves include key-blocks, and the stone doorway, which may be a later addition, has a rusticated round-headed opening flanked by Tuscan pilasters and an entablature. The entrance has a six-panelled door that has been altered and includes a fanlight.
On either side of the main building, there are low curving screen walls made of brick, which extend south at a lower level to the garden and railings. The forecourt features a red brick and stone dwarf wall topped with stone coping, along with stone piers that have capping. The 19th-century railings consist of uprights with spiked finials and panelled standards. Inside, the building retains late 17th and 18th-century panelling, a fireplace surround, and a staircase.
Grey Lodge is a two-storey extension built of rubble, featuring two window bays on the right side and a parapet. It has a peaked slate roof with one box dormer and sash windows that are three panes wide, showing sagging lintels on the first floor. There is also a long, one-storey addition, likely from the 19th century, against the east garden wall.
Both The Red House and Grey Lodge have stone slate roofs at the rear. Together with several nearby properties, including Donore, Eastbury House, Elizabeth House, and others, they form a significant group of buildings.
