Description
Brook Cottage with an attached barn at the west end of Grooms Cottage is a farmhouse that has been converted into two attached cottages, dating from the late 16th century, possibly with an earlier core. The building features walls made of chalk block and banded flint, topped with a thatched roof that is half hipped at the left end and continues into the barn roof at the right end. There are 20th-century brick stacks at both gable ends. The structure is 1½ to 2 storeys high and has a total of four windows.
The stone-framed windows at bays two and four on the ground floor are 2-light and 4-light, featuring hollow-chamfered stone mullions and iron casements with fixed lead lights, each with separate labels above. There is a 3-light stone-mullion window at the top right, while the remaining windows are a mix of 2-light and 3-light wooden casements. The door to Grooms Cottage is located on the left gable end and is a plank-and-muntin door, sheltered by a thatch porch canopy supported by two wooden posts. The door to Brook Cottage is positioned right of center and is a flush-panelled door with two frosted upper lights, dating from the 20th century, also with a thatch porch canopy supported by two chamfered wooden posts.
The adjoining barn has walls made of chalk block and a thatched roof, although part of the roof structure has collapsed, dating from the 17th century.
