Description

Rose Cottage and Brookside are a farmhouse, likely dating to around 1600, and subsequently altered. The building is now divided into two dwellings. It is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with quoins, and has a stone slate roof. The original rectangular plan consists of three bays with a through-passage behind a former firehood, which was later divided into four units by a partition in the central section.

The two-storey structure is divided into Rose Cottage (the left half) and Brookside (the right half). Rose Cottage retains its original main doorway, which has a broad chamfered surround and a triangular head, now sheltered by a reduced porch with a lean-to roof. To its left is an altered window at ground floor with moulded jambs, and above it a three-light mullioned window. Brookside has altered openings at ground floor, including three windows and three doors. At the first floor, Brookside has two mullioned windows similar to that in Rose Cottage; the other first-floor windows have been altered or inserted. A very large external chimney stack is located at the left gable.

Internally, Brookside's through-passage has a timber-framed partition to the left (partially removed), with remnants of stud-and-plank panelling. The front room at that end features a large rectangular stone fireplace. On the first floor, there is a scarf-jointed wall plate. Brookside also contains beams with cyma-stopped chamfer, and both properties have kingpost roof trusses.
