Description
This barn, located on the west side of the road immediately east of Spenser House, dates from around 1600 and has been partially altered for use as a cottage. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone and features a stone slate roof. The barn has a four-bay aisled plan, with opposed wagon entrances situated in the third bay from the south end, recessed between the aisles. The east side aisles have inserted doors and windows, and the right aisle includes a chimney that breaks through the roof. The south gable has a small window and several small breathers.
The interior is particularly noteworthy, showcasing post-and-truss construction with four frames, including the north gable. It features posts with arch-bracing connecting to tie-beams and aisle-plates, king-post roof trusses with angle struts, and two pairs of purlins in both the nave and aisles, with stone and brick partitions incorporated in some areas. This barn is a good example of the aisled barns typical in this district, though such structures are rare elsewhere in the county.
