Description

The Great Barn is a Grade II* listed barn, likely built in the late 16th century and altered over time. It is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble and features a stone slate roof that slightly sweeps over the aisles, with two translucent panels near the ridge. The barn has an aisled six-bay plan and includes opposed recessed wagon entrances located in the fourth bay from the west end. There is a three-light mullioned window on the east gable, along with some slit breathers, and various inserted windows and doors.

The interior is particularly noteworthy, showcasing post-and-truss construction with aisles on both sides. The posts rest on stone stylobates, and there is archbracing to the beams and aisle struts. The nave has two pairs of purlins, which are likely also present in each aisle. This barn is a good example of the aisled barns found in this district, although such structures are otherwise rare in the county.
