Description
House, now divided into two houses. The property dates to the late 18th century and was likely divided in the 19th century, with alterations in the 20th century. It has a brick-faced slate roof and gable-end brick stacks.
The house was originally designed with a double-depth plan, featuring two main front rooms and a central entrance. There remains an original stairwell to the rear of the room on the left. In the 19th century, it was divided into two separate dwellings, Mount-Morin on the left and Cobblestones on the right, both accessed through a divided central doorway.
The building is three storeys high and has three bays. The ground floor features a central paired doorway with a segmental head, a raised surround, a six-panelled fielded door on the right, a 20th-century door on the left, and a wide fanlight with decorative glazing. Large 16-pane sash windows are positioned on either side, with a plinth below. The first floor has large 16-pane sash windows with cambered gauged brick heads, a central 12-pane sash with sidelights, and a second floor with a 12-pane sash on the left, a 20th-century window in the center, and a replaced 12-pane sash on the right. A cill band course runs along the first floor. A two-storey brick lean-to addition is found on the right side, with a 20th-century window at ground and first floor levels. The front of the houses is paved with pebble cobbles, laid in a semicircular pattern. The rear of Cobblestones has 16-pane sash windows on the ground, first, and second floors, supplemented by 20th-century replacements.
The interior of Mount-Morin includes an entrance to a passage on the right, leading to a front and rear room on the left, with a stairwell between them. The front ground-floor room features a three-tier cornice with floral and foliage mouldings and beading, a 20th-century fireplace, and panelled lower doors from cupboards on either side. A segmental arch is present at the rear of the passage. The oval stairwell contains a curved dog-leg staircase with a ramped handrail, moulded string, stick balusters, column newels, and a stair lantern with a moulded plaster surround. A two-panelled door leads to a straight staircase to the cellar, which features brick arches with square columns and imposts. The first floor has six-panelled doors, and the second floor has four-panelled doors. Deep cupboards are built into the space behind the stairwell, between the front and rear rooms.
The interior of Cobblestones has not been inspected.
There is only one other house in the village with an oval stairwell, located at Sam Hancock’s, Garrett Street, Cawsand.
