Description
Heavitree House is a house dating to circa 1750, with alterations in the 19th century. It is constructed of rendered and lined rubble with a slate roof, featuring a gable end stack to the right in brick. The building is arranged around a central entrance plan, with rooms to the right and left of a passage, and a staircase in the room to the left backing onto the passage. A rear right service wing, of one-room plan, is incorporated, with an entrance to the service wing from an internal courtyard at cellar level on the right side.
The house has two storeys and a cellar, with two bays facing Heavitree Road. The ground and first floors feature four-pane sash windows, and the central entrance has a four-panelled and glazed door with pilasters, approached by steps with 19th-century railings. Two small, two-light casements are located at the second floor level, and a modillion cornice runs along the eaves. The right side features a gable end extended over the rear service wing; a courtyard likely existed originally, enclosed with a door and an inner entrance to the cellar on the left side. The left side has four-pane sash windows on the ground, first, and second floors, while the right side has a four-pane sash window on the ground and first floors.
The interior retains exceptionally fine 18th-century features. The central entrance hall on the ground floor has a moulded plaster cornice. The room to the right has a three-tier plaster cornice with cable moulding, a roundel, a triglyph moulding, and acanthus moulding. The fireplace in this room has reeded pilasters and a dentil-moulded mantel, with cupboards featuring pointed arched doors with Gothic glazing and dado panelling. Both front rooms have six-panelled doors. The room to the left has an eared architrave and a moulded mantel above the fireplace, along with dado-panelling. The staircase, boxed in at the rear, is a winder with fielded panelling to the sides. At the first floor, two-panelled doors are present; the front left room features a fireplace with a dentilled mantel, and the front right room has a fireplace with Greek key fretwork below a moulded mantel, a panelled cupboard, and a moulded plaster cornice. Fielded panelling extends to the stairway to the second floor, which also has two-panelled doors. In the rear service room on the ground floor is a stone fireplace with a moulded mantel and cupboards to the sides, featuring panelling and H hinges, with drawers below. The plasterwork in the front right room, displaying a free interpretation of classical ornamentation, is particularly noteworthy, typical of the high interior standards found in Kingsand.
