Description

House, built around 1750, with alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The house is constructed of rubble, rendered and lined out, and has a slate roof with a brick gable stack on the right side. It is arranged with a central passage leading to rooms on either side, a stair hall towards the rear right, and a two-storey integral service wing on the rear right. The front elevation has three storeys and three bays. The ground floor features a central 20th-century brick porch and door, a four-pane sash window to the right, and a shallow canted bay to the left with a four-pane sash window and sidelights. The first floor has three four-pane sash windows, while the second floor has two, with a central blind window.

The interior retains exceptionally fine 18th-century features. The entrance passage has fielded panelled walls on both sides, with two-panelled doors on the left and right. The door on the right is no longer in use, and there is an additional door to the rear of the passage. The front-right room has complete fielded panelling, a closed fireplace with a remaining moulded cornice, a corner cupboard with shaped shelves and a segmental head. The room to the left has vertical panelling with panelled cupboards to the right and left of a 20th-century fireplace. The staircase rises in a single, straight flight between each floor, with turned balusters and a moulded handrail. A ground floor room in the rear wing contains a battened door with a sliding panel; a former rear service stair was located to the rear of the wing. One first-floor room, formerly two, has a cupboard with a segmental head and a key and drawer below, along with a moulded mantel for a fireplace. A similar cupboard and a two-panelled door are located on the left end. On the second floor, the staircase has stick balusters; the front-right room has vertical panelling and a cupboard with a two-panelled door. The building was formerly the Prince George Inn.
