Description

Island Cottage is a house built around 1750, with alterations and additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of rubble and rendered, topped with a two-span slate roof featuring gable end stacks. The layout consists of a two-room plan with a central entrance and a staircase located at the rear of the front right room. A deeper parallel range was added to the rear in the 19th century, creating a double depth plan. In the 20th century, internal partition walls were removed, and a first-floor balcony was added to the rear and right side of the house.

The building has two storeys and features two windows on the front. The ground floor includes two 12-pane sash windows and a central six-panelled door set within a 20th-century porch. The first floor has two 2-light casement windows with toplights. On the right side, there is a 20th-century 2-light casement window on both the ground and first floors, along with a 20th-century balcony verandah supported by brick piers, which features a 12-pane sash window on the ground floor. The verandah extends to the rear, which faces the sea, and there is a cellar at the back.

Inside, Island Cottage retains notable 18th-century features. The ground floor has been opened up as a single room, with a dog-leg staircase at the rear right adorned with Chinoiserie panels. The rear left section includes a fireplace with an eared architrave and dentils beneath a moulded mantel, as well as round-arched cupboards on either side with shaped shelves and panelled doors. The remainder of the interior has not been inspected but may also contain similar historic features.
