Description
Kilna Quay is a lime warehouse that has been converted into a house, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The building is constructed of banded rubble made from slatestone and Devon limestone, topped with an asbestos slate roof featuring gable ends.
The rectangular plan structure is situated on the River Tiddy, and there is no evidence to suggest it was ever a watermill; it was likely built as a warehouse for the lime industry. The building has two storeys plus a loft and consists of six bays. On the ground floor, there are two bays on the left with 2-light casements that have flat brick arches, and three similar 2-light casements on the right. The first floor mirrors the ground floor with two casements on the left and three on the right, along with a loading door above the double doors, which features 20th-century glazing and a segmental brick arch. A 20th-century external stair leads up to this loading door.
There are two hipped dormers, each fitted with 20th-century casements. The right side of the building faces the river and has loading doors at all three levels, with the upper two featuring 20th-century casements. The left side includes a 20th-century door at the upper ground floor level and a half-glazed door at the loft level, which is accessible via a bridge leading to the road. The rear of the building has a wide segmental-arched double doorway, with two casements on the right and two on the left, and a doorway situated between the two on the left. Some of the casements are from the 18th century and have strap hinges. On the first floor, there are two casements on the right and two on the left, along with a central loading door that has double glazed doors inserted from the 20th century. The interior has not been inspected.
