Description
The milestone on the A38 near the junction with Tredinnick Lane is a granite structure dating from around 1830. It has a rectangular ashlar post with incised lettering indicating the distance to Saltash as five miles. Below the letter 'S', there is an incised benchmark.
This milestone is part of a series established by the Saltash Turnpike Trust, which was created by an Act of Parliament in 1761. It likely dates from the 1830s, a period when the Trust undertook improvement work on the road extending towards Trerulehead.
Milestones are significant as they are among the few remaining physical markers of historical road use, illustrating the standardization of roads and the introduction of turnpikes. This particular stone is intact and remains in its original location, contributing to its group value with other listed mileposts along this route.
