Description
Trobus Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from 1849, with an earlier wing from the 18th century or before. It is constructed of granite, shale rubble, and cob, topped with scantle slate roofs. The building is L-shaped, featuring a stair turret at the angle and a lean-to at the end that adjoins an outshut to the rear wing. The symmetrical south front has two storeys and three windows, with a central door. All openings are slightly arched and have granite voussoirs and projecting keystones. The windows are 16-paned sashes without horns. The granite gable chimneys have moulded drip courses. The wing is made of cob and has slate hanging on the first floor of the west wall and part of the gable end. It has two 16-paned sash windows and an entrance through the outshut in the east wall. A projecting gable breast features a plaster panel, and the stair turret includes a semi-circular headed arched window with interlaced glazing bars.
Inside, the main staircase from 1849 in the turret has a wreathed newel and square balusters, while a second staircase in the wing is from the mid-19th century. The front part has a granite flagged floor, and several 18th-century two-panelled doors with HL hinges remain in the wing, which also contains a blocked bread oven at the north end. The date stone from 1849 bears the initials JHR for John Huddy Retallick. Near the curved end of the granite-coped westward projecting garden wall, there is a stone marked DH 1816 and another marked DH 1827, both related to Daniel Huddy, with the latter found in a 1980s farm building. Information on the names was provided by the occupier.
