Description

The Smithery is a small house dated 1837, marked by the initials WRP above the doorway. It is constructed from shale rubble with granite quoins and dressings, featuring brick voussoirs and a hipped scantle slate roof with brick chimneys. The building has a double depth plan and a symmetrical front, standing two storeys tall with three windows. The central entrance is framed by a semi-circular gauged brick arch with a projecting granite keystone. The original six-panelled door has had its top panels replaced with a plain fanlight. All front windows are 16-paned sashes without horns, set in slightly arched openings that also have projecting granite keystones. The rear elevation has a door positioned closer to one side, with a stair window located between floors. Flanking the rear are 16-paned casements on both the ground and first floors, which feature lift-off hinges. The interior is reported to be little altered and unmodernised.
