Description
Glebe Farmhouse is a farmhouse and outbuilding dating back to the 17th or 18th century, possibly with earlier origins. It is constructed of shale, cob, and granite, with an asbestos slate roof and brick chimneys. The building is a long, single-depth range, with the upper end originally a shippon (animal shelter), potentially part of the original house, and the lower end now the main house, extended with a mid-19th century wing at the rear.
The upper end, which is two storeys high, features an enlarged opening obscured by an outshut to the left, a partly blocked door now a window, an inserted window, and widened granite steps—likely blocking a former window—to the right. The first floor has an early 18th-century casement window with original leaded glazing and an inserted or enlarged doorway at the top of the steps. The main house portion has a centrally placed doorway with a 19th-century door designed in the style of the 17th century, sheltered by a slate-roofed porch that incorporates a framed gable salvaged from repairs to Ladock School porch. A 20th-century metal window sits to the left, and a 12-paned casement window is located at a lower level to the right. The first floor of the house has two windows offset to the left of the ground floor windows, both being 12-paned casements. Four arched pigeon holes are situated between the windows, with two to the right. The first floor of the house is constructed of cob. A hipped roof is present. A steep, gabled chimney visible in the party wall from the shippon end suggests it was originally a single-story range. Ground floor walls are approximately three feet thick. The pegged shippon roof structure is likely from the 18th century.
