Description

No. 37 Edward Street is a villa built in the early 1830s, likely designed by Philip Sambell. It features stucco on masonry and has dry Delabole slate hipped roofs with wide eaves supported by moulded brackets, along with cast-iron ogee gutters. The building has a plan consisting of two approximately square double-depth blocks connected by a link building. It stands two storeys high and is characterized by panelled giant corner pilasters and moulded stucco architraves around sash windows, which have marginal panes that may be copies of the originals. The original west entrance front has a two-window layout with a centrally located porch that has a doorway on the left side. The south garden front includes an original three-window block on the left and a 20th-century two-window block on the right, designed to match the style of the original villa. An older linking bay is set back between these blocks, and there are canted bay windows on the ground floor of the left-hand block. The interior has not been inspected but is expected to be of interest.
