Description
The Wig and Pen Public House, along with its attached forecourt walls and railings, is a pair of villas dating from the 1830s. The building features stucco on masonry and has a hipped asbestos slate roof with projecting eaves. It is situated on a street corner with an L-shaped plan. The structure has two storeys, with a three-window range facing Frances Street and a four-window range facing Castle Street. The first-floor windows are early 19th-century sixteen-pane sashes, while the ground floor has 20th-century horned sixteen-pane sashes and an early 19th-century sash with margin panes located to the right of the Castle Street front. All windows are set in raised stucco architraves with vermiculated keys.
There is a later 19th-century stuccoed canted porch featuring a cornice to the parapet and a mid-20th-century door positioned at the angle between the two fronts. Above the central semi-circular arched doorway on the Castle Street front is a blind window, with a mid-20th-century door set in a raised stucco architrave and a bracketed cornice over a six-panel door that is also set in an architrave with a decorative fanlight.
Inside, the ground floor has been altered with plaster stripped from the walls, while the rest of the interior has not been inspected. The property is complemented by low dressed granite forecourt walls that serve as plinths for 19th-century iron railings, along with granite steps leading up to the porch.
