Description

Castle Lodge is an early 19th-century villa, likely designed by Philip Sambell for Josephus Ferris, who was developing the area. The building is constructed of stuccoed masonry, with a low-pitched, grouted slate roof and wide eaves. It has a square, double-depth plan with a service wing at the rear of the right side. A central porch fronts the entrance hall. The villa is two storeys high and has a symmetrical design with three windows on both the entrance and garden fronts. Features include plinths, panelled corner pilasters, moulded architraves, widely-spaced brackets, and a moulded, carved cornice under the eaves. Original hornless sash windows with glazing bars are also present. The entrance front has a single-storey, closed porch with a moulded entablature supported by fat square columns, leading to a doorway on the left-hand side. Blind windows are on the left. The garden front features a round-headed central niche on the ground floor and margin panes to the flanking windows. The interior was not inspected, but is likely of interest.
