Description
No. 53 Castle Street is a villa, now used as a shop, built in the early 19th century. It was likely designed by Philip Sambell for developer Josephus Ferris. The building features stucco on masonry and has an asbestos slate hipped roof with deep eaves. It has a square double-depth plan with a service wing at the back on the left side. The villa is two storeys tall and has a symmetrical three-window layout on both the entrance and garden fronts. These fronts include plinths, panelled quoin pilasters, moulded architraves, and widely spaced eaves brackets. The entrance front has a central doorway with an anthemion and a 20th-century door, while there are blind windows on the right side. The garden front features a central round-headed niche on the ground floor and plate glass in the flanking openings, with original hornless sashes that have glazing bars. Inside, the original plaster ceiling cornices in the garden-front rooms, entrance passage, and former stair hall are all moulded and carved, except for the room to the right of the entrance.
