Description

This is a large shop with residential accommodation, dating to 1886, as indicated by a plaque inscribed 'WPP'. The front of the building is clad in asbestos slate hanging over a timber frame, while the rest is rendered with a stucco finish on a masonry base, featuring a moulded string course between the upper floors. It has a steeply pitched asbestos slate hipped roof with gabled dormers containing two-pane, two-light casement windows, as well as projecting eaves with paired brackets at the corners, and brick end stacks.

The building follows a double-depth plan and rises to three storeys at the front, and two storeys at the rear. The symmetrical street façade has three windows. The original shop front is largely intact and includes a double-width configuration with a recessed central doorway, containing a pair of glazed elliptical-arched doors with an overlight flanked by two-light sidelights with quadrant lights. It features granite stall risers and end piers, elliptical-arched lights, shaped mullions with returned consoles, a moulded entablature with paired end consoles under a moulded cornice. The left-hand return front has two windows and a recessed, segmental-arched, pilastered doorway, approached by steps with a turned balustrade; the doorway is accessed via a six-panel door with overlight. The shop front continues for two bays in the same detail as the street front. The first-floor windows are contained within moulded surrounds with hoods, while the second-floor windows have simpler key blocked surrounds. All windows feature four-pane, horned sashes on brackets. The interior of the building was not inspected. The shop front is of a high quality and remarkably complete.
