Description
Hersham Carpentry is a house that was once a combined residence and carpenter's shop, dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with a late 20th-century rear extension. The building features whitewashed rendered cob on a stone plinth and has a thatched roof, which is hipped at the left end, along with brick chimneys. Originally, the layout likely consisted of two rooms with a cross passage and an adjoining shop on the left side, which included a loft above. The current layout has stairs in the passage, and the carpenter's shop is now part of the house.
The house has a symmetrical, two-storey front with three windows and a 20th-century gabled porch. The ground floor windows are timber casements with four panes per light, while the first floor has three 2-light casements with three panes per light. There is a separate entrance to the former carpenter's shop, which has a 2-light timber casement with six panes per light, located to the right of the entrance.
Inside, the ground floor room on the right features a large fireplace with an ovolo-moulded fireplace beam and complex stops, and it previously had a cloam oven. This room also has two cross beams and axial ceiling beams. The ground floor room to the left of the passage also contains a large fireplace with a fireplace beam and a cloam oven. The roof timbers in the former shop area are pegged.
