Stable About 20 Metres South Of Pennans Farmhouse

The stable located about 20 metres south of Pennans Farmhouse dates from the early 18th century and has undergone some alterations in the 20th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring Pentewan stone dressings, and is partly rendered. The roof consists of both slurried scantle slate and corrugated asbestos, with ridge tiles and hipped ends.

The building has a U-shaped plan, with the central range serving as a cow house, which includes a loft above. The front left wing functions as a stable, containing loose boxes on the ground floor and a loft above, which includes a pigeon loft. The front right wing houses a coach house on the ground floor, also with a loft above.

The exterior is two stories high and features a symmetrical front. The main range has three slightly advanced central bays that are rendered, with a moulded stone plinth and rusticated stone quoins. It includes a moulded string course and a central doorway with rusticated jambs and voussoirs, leading to plank double doors. There are segmental-arched windows on either side of the doorway. On the first floor, there is a central oval window and small window openings to the right and left.

The left front wing is also two stories, with similar moulded stone plinth and rusticated quoins, and a moulded string course. The inner side features a doorway with an overlight leading to the stable. The front has two ground floor windows, one with a flat brick arch and one with a segmental arch; one window is blocked and another boarded. Above, there is a loading door. The left side of this wing is made of stone rubble and plinth, with four rows of square pigeon holes at loft level.

The right front wing is built of brick with stone dressings similar to the left wing. It features a carriage entrance with an elliptical brick arch and rusticated stone jambs, along with a single doorway with a timber lintel to the right. The right side has been rebuilt in 20th-century concrete block, with random door and window openings, and includes a loading door and pigeon holes at the loft level to the right.

Inside, the stables on the left retain loose boxes with wooden partitions.
