Description

Halwyn is a former shipbuilding yard that has been converted into a private house. The main building dates from the late 19th century, while the right-hand range likely dates from the early 19th century. It is constructed from rendered and painted stone rubble, topped with slate roofs featuring gable ends, and the taller range on the right has a pyramid roof. There is a 20th-century rendered brick front lateral chimney stack located to the right of the center.

The layout consists of a single depth three-room plan with entrances on the left-hand side wall and near the center, while the right range has a one-room plan. The building is two stories high and features a regular overall arrangement of five plus one windows. The left side has five windows, which include three early 20th-century two-light casements set in segmental openings, along with a partly glazed 20th-century door near the center of the elevation. The first floor has four two-light and one one-light early 20th-century casements. The taller right range has one window and is built directly on bedrock at a higher level, featuring early 20th-century two-light casements on both the ground and first floors.

The interior is not accessible. In the 19th century, the shipbuilding yard was owned by W.R. Guy and later purchased by Captain William Vickery, who converted it into a private house after the First World War. The last vessel built at the yard was the Bessy Jane, which was captained by Richard Mitchell, known by the nickname Dandy Dick. Halwyn is situated in a prominent location on the south side of Port Isaac harbour.
