Description

Fernleigh is a house dating from around the mid-19th century. It is constructed of stone rubble with brick dressings and has a slate roof with gable ends, boxed eaves, and brick chimney stacks. The house follows a double-depth plan, with rooms on either side of a central stair hall.

The front of the house has a regular three-window arrangement. The ground floor features two tall, original 12-pane hornless sash windows with crown glass and brick dressings, and a central 19th-century six-panel door with panelled reveals and a fanlight. Three original 12-pane hornless sash windows, also with crown glass, are located above. Two full, probably 19th-century gabled dormers contain 4-pane sashes.

The interior is largely complete with 19th-century chimney pieces, cornices, doors, and doorcases. Fernleigh was the home of the local entrepreneur Warwick Richard Guy, whose life and times are documented in Winstanley’s 1978 publication, High Tide at Port Isaac.
