Description

The Smugglers Rest is a house, likely dating from the late 18th century. It is built of rendered and painted stone rubble, with a projecting wing to the front that has been rendered and stuccoed. Part of the right-hand side elevation was rebuilt in brick, while the left-hand side is slate-hung. The roof is slate, with gable ends, and a projecting gabled wing facing forward.

The house probably started as a single-room range, with a one-room projecting wing added to the right. The main entrance is located in a projecting porch set into the angle between the main range and the front wing. The front has an asymmetrical two-window design. The ground floor of the projecting wing has splayed corners, with the first floor set out over. A late 19th-century six-pane sash window is above the porch. The projecting wing features a likely late 19th-century shop window with heavy glazing bars on the ground floor, and a late 19th-century six-pane sash window above. The interior was not inspected. The house is situated on an important elevation where Church Hill meets Roscarock Hill.
