Description

Bay Cottages and adjoining outbuilding are two cottages that were originally a single house, dating from the 18th century. They feature granite and elvan rubble walls, with some dressed granite, and have a steep asbestos slate roof with deep brick chimneys at the gable ends. The outbuilding has a low corrugated asbestos roof that extends over an integral rear outshut.

The building has a double depth plan, originally consisting of two rooms with a central cross passage leading to a stair hall between two rear service rooms. In the early 19th century, it was converted into two cottages by adding a second passage and stair to the right of the original passage. The outbuilding is located to the right, set back from the front of the house and extending further at the rear.

The north front has a regular four-window arrangement, likely originally a symmetrical five-window front with a central doorway. Currently, there are two doorways: the right-hand doorway is in a former 18th-century window opening and features an early 19th-century six-panel door with flush beaded bottom panels, a moulded lock rail, and later glazing in the top panels. The other doorway is original and has a 20th-century door. The windows are 20th-century horned sashes. The outbuilding's front is rendered and has a doorway accessed by 20th-century steps. The right-hand return wall remains unaltered, displaying irregularly placed door and window openings, with old windows in two of the openings, and two oak lintels with scratch moulding.

The interior of the left-hand cottage has been inspected and retains many 18th-century features, including a Chinoiserie stair, two-panel doors, bowtell-moulded beams, and muntin and plank softwood partitions. The other cottage is reported to be even more complete and unaltered.
