Description

Goonhaven County Primary School is a board school dating to 1876. It is constructed of killas stone with granite dressings, and has tall brick lateral stacks. The building has an E-shaped plan with projecting wings and porches situated between them. The original design included a large central schoolroom intended for the top class, with a folding screen allowing it to be linked to the adjacent room. An entrance hall and cloakroom were positioned to the left of the schoolroom, with two classrooms in each of the projecting cross wings, separated by folding screens, and a shorter wing projecting forward, containing a small room, now the staff room. Until the 1950s, the front right-hand room contained a gallery. The plan remains largely unchanged, although the original folding screens have been replaced by fixed partitions and a small 20th-century extension has been added to the front of the left-hand wing. It is built in a Gothic style, and has single-storey, unaltered elevations aside from the front wing. The symmetrical front elevation features a 1:1:1:1 bay arrangement with projecting cross wings with gable ends, a smaller gable end to the central wing, and entrance porches between the wings. Each gable end has a pointed arched opening with a hoodmould; doorways are found in the porches, and large three-light traceried reticulated wooden windows in the other gable ends. The ledged doors have shouldered heads with blind tympana above. Internally, some original doors and dado panelling remain, along with original Gothic roof structures, although these are partly obscured by 20th-century acoustic ceilings.
